Michael Dubina, Poplars

Michael Dubina, I have chosen the Illinois landscape as my subject because I am entranced by its often overlooked qualities of quiet beauty and power, a power that seems to me both awesome and fragile. The puddling effects of watercolor, as well as powerful color contrasts, combined with a delicacy of marks and lines, makes watercolor an ideal medium for recording the drama of Midwestern landscapes. The honesty of the medium brings about a very personal interaction between the artist, the subject, and the work. In the spirit of a poet or composer, doing watercolors on this intimate scale has become my notebook of sorts. A visual diary allowing for spontaneous notation of color, emotion, and reverence.
