Jean Richardson Why the Horse? When I am asked about my fascination with the horse as subject matter, I often describe how, on many levels, the image is ideal for my true subjects, motion and energy. The horse real being is lovely in itself. I love to see and appreciate the power, the speed, and the physical beauty of the horse. My crayon drawings are my contact with this natural world. The paintings, on the other hand, are my attempts to take this image and make of it a symbol. The horse as a metaphor for the human spirit; unbridled, striving, sometimes heroic, often restless, full of energy, floating above us, calling us to other realms.
